Welcome to My 2022 Journey

  • Introduce yourself, your goals and journey you are about to embark on.  What are some of the goals that you hope to achieve by the end of the school year and WHY did you decide to select the skills that you did.

My name is Mr. Hussey, each year I try to do something a little different for this challenge. This year I am going to try a few different things at once and see if I can do them together while trying to teach and raise a small child. My overall goal is that while I focus on my fitness in order to be able to keep up with Carwyn and do anything that he would like to do as he gets older.

My goal for this year is to 1. Get a back squat that is 200lb or more when squatting below parallel. I want to do this as in 2018 I had to have a hip surgery and since then I have been unable to squat below parallel at really any weight or speed without my legs locking up or being in pain the next few days. This is a very regular movement that needs to happen each and every day especially with Carwyn running around so I want to do this without pain again.

2. Swim, before the pandemic I used to swim all the time. When lockdown happened I stopped swimming I really want to get back to swimming a few times a week. It is great exercise and Carwyn is starting to swim so him seeing me swim may make him want to swim more too.

  • Q: Where are you starting with your skills and abilities?  Post some samples / pictures / videos of your current abilities.

I started this journey on March 19th by going to my local pool and swimming. I will be starting squatting next saturday and posting my weight I can squat below parallel without pain (Right now it is around 60 lbs).

  • HOW are you going to start? What do you plan on doing first? Is there any research or videos or tutorials that you are going to start off with?

I am going to be following two training programs that I have found for this off the internet. The squat one calls for 3 days a week for 8 weeks so instead I am going to be doing 2 days a week for 12 weeks and see how I do. I am going to squat on Saturday and Thursday.

This program was created by a professional fitness racer and Crossfitter, Brent Fikowski and is very detailed and thought out. I have attached and example of the first session for squatting to this blog post.

For swimming I am going to be using on online free swim program from Train Sink or Swim. I will use their free program that was posted in the past. I plan just to go back to the first thing they posted and work my way forward. I will swim on Saturday and Sunday.

  • What are you excited for? What are you nervous for?
I am excited to really have an exercise focus for the next 12 weeks and be working towards a goal. I am nervous that this will not go well or that I will really have to scale it back. Taking on two things at once whiel playing hockey on Wed, teaching and being a parent may end up being to much,
